The Garde Mobile was a reserve force created in 1866 to bolster France’s military numbers against Prussia.

Largely undertrained and poorly equipped at the start of the conflict, they became the backbone of the French defense

following the collapse of the Second Empire and the capture of Napoleon III at Sedan.
